Ben Bethell

head of programmes & OPERATIONS

I’m a people person, a community person and a recently converted data person.

I’ve been working in adventure playgrounds since I was 16, which means most of what I know about play I learnt outdoors in the drizzle, usually while something was being jumped off, climbed on or set on fire.

I’m also lucky enough to have learnt from a fantastic range of playworkers (old school, new school and kicked out of school) from all over London – Kennington, Bow, Cally Road, and Park Lane. I’ve also done my time working in primary schools, PRUs, secondary schools and colleges, where play is rarer but no less necessary.

Alongside working with young people, I spent over a decade co-running a dancehall and reggae sound system: club nights, festival stages, carnivals, a record label, a radio show on Rinse FM. My degree was in Social and Cultural Studies, and I’ve just completed a Msc in data science and am midway through an apprenticeship as a Machine Learning Engineer.
